Idris Elba is the 6'3 British actor, singer, rapper, producer and DJ who defines sexual chocolate and the "tall, dark and handsome" cliche. Born on September 6, 1972, Elba is known for playing Beyonce's husband in Obsessed, Russell "Stringer" Bell in HBO's The Wire, the BBC series "Luther," Nelson Mandela in the Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom movie and so much more!
The Golden Globe winner for Best Actor has a father from Sierra Leone Africa and a mother from Ghana. After his parents married in Sierra Leone, they moved to London. Idris was born Irissa Akuna Elba.
After helping an uncle work as a DJ at weddings, in 1986 Idris decided to launch his own DJ company with some friends - within a year of assisting his uncle. In 1988 Elba won a place in the National Youth Music Theatre but he had to work a variety of ghetto jobs (like telemarketing) instead. He began working as a DJ named Big Driis when he was 19 and began auditioning for TV roles at 20 years old.
In 1995 Elba scored his first role in a UK series called Bramwell. He played the lead character, an African theif named Charlie. He also played a gigolo that very same year on the "Sex" episode of Absolutely Fabulous. Hey, ya gotta start somewhere!
Soon Idris' career was on fire, and not just in England. He was becoming a household name here in the States. What's so great about Idris is that you don't know what character he will play next. He played Charles Miner on The Office, He had a fairly big role in Thor... there isn't really much that Elba won't do.
For some reason, I didn't know the following Elba facts until today! His trivia includes: He was named Essence magazine's Sexiest Man of the Year in 2013 and People Magazine's #2 in its annual Sexiest Man Alive, 2013 issue! We can't blame the editors for selecting Mr. Idris. He currently has a girlfriend who is pregnant. We wish them well.
