Ellar Coltrane Biography of Boyhood's Mason

Ellar Coltrane was born on August 27, 1994 in Austin, Texas. Ellar Coltrane is famous for his roles in One Star State of Mind, Fast Food Nation and the highly anticipated film, Boyhood. Ellar grows up in front of the camera for the groundbreaking movie.
Ellar didn't spend much time filming Boyhood each year, but he was homeschooled until 9th grade. Coltrane received his GED. Coltrane says that his personal life influenced the script of Boyhood. Ellar enjoys photography and his character Mason does as well.

The humble star hasn't had much film or television work for the past decade but we're sure that will be changing soon. Coltrane's director Richard Linklater only has positive things to say about his muse and Ellar believes that working with Richard was an enriching experience.

Coltrane agreed to the project knowing that he would have to commit to it for more than a decade. He is now 19 years old and began playing Mason when he was only 6 years old. When asked if he would participate in any sequels for the film, Ellar that he "absolutely" would play Mason again because making the movie "was a blast" and he "would follow Rick [the director] to the end of the Earth." We love this bromance.

Seeing children grow up in front of the camera is far from an original concept, but capturing their growth in the same film is revolutionary.

Linklater said"It almost isn't even like a film at all. It's somewhere between summer camp and an art project. It's like a time sculpture." Patricia Arquette and Ethan Hawke play Mason's parents in the film and they were also filmed for more than a decade.

Spending a dozen years acting in a movie that didn't have a release date made Ellar the target of his friends' jokes. Critics have raved about this movie.
